Huyton Station Mosaic 2010
This mosaic was created in November 2010 – The design was based on a drawing by 14 year old Rebecca McGory who won a competition ran on Local radio station KCC in conjunction with Merseytravel. The characters featured in the design show changing fashions: The main girl (centre) wears a 60’s mini skirt – there is a funky dude from the 70’s in flares, a young lady in a 50’s style evening dress and a little skally-wag in a La’s tee shirt
It meant a lot to me being asked to create the work – being a Huyton with Roby lad myself and growing up next to the oldest railway line in the world (opened in 1830). I wanted to use mixed media and make the piece in relief – giving it a three dimensional aspect. The mosaic features broken Homemaker pottery and some of my favorite dishes that had been broken over the past 20 years! (I had kept the pieces in a box), there is also PVC Electrical cable to create the black lines, brass and copper on the steam trains, shelf brackets and door numbers. The artwork is 8 ft wide and is situated in the underpass of Huyton Railway Station.
